Dear All,
Divecha Centre for Climate Change (DCCC) Seminar

Title: "GFDL’s Climate and Earth System Modeling: From CMIP5 to CMIP6"

Speaker: Prof. V. Ramaswamy, Director, NOAA/Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, and Professor, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Program,
Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, USA

Venue: Centre for Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences (CAOS) Seminar Hall

Date & Time: Wednesday, 08 November 2017;  3:30 PM

Tea/Cofee: 3:15 PM

ALL ARE WELCOME

Abstract:

The World Climate Research Program’s Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) has been a robust framework for conducting comparisons of the world’s models on a common reference frame through positing common model experiments for
the world’s climate modeling centers to perform. Analyses of the CMIP simulations have provided key inputs into the IPCC Assessments (e.g., CMIP5 àIPCC AR5 (2013), and CMIP6, currently ongoing, expected to feed into IPCC AR6 (2021)).
Over the past four years, GFDL has been analyzing the biases and deficiencies in our CMIP5-era models, and developing the next-generation Climate and Earth System Models for the CMIP6-era. The research has comprised a number of
advances in the atmospheric, oceanic, biospheric, cryospheric, and ecosystem components, along with the integrative aspects to capture the realism and wholesomeness of the system. Observations and theoretical developments have
enabled improved representations of processes and interactions in the Earth System, with resulting improvements in the simulation of key climate variables and phenomena. These hold the promise of better estimates of climate, and
biogeochemical, feedbacks and sensitivity, and more insights into the central uncertainties.

Announcements / Talk on the 25th at 3.30 pm by Freddy Bouchet.

Dear all,

Prof. Freddy Bouchet will be with us on the 25th of Sept (Monday). He will present a seminar at 3.30 pm in CAOS. Details below...

Title: Extreme heat waves sampled through large deviation algorithms.

Speaker: Freddy Bouchet, (joint work with Francesco Ragone and Jeroen Wouters)

Abstract:

For some aspects of climate dynamics, rare dynamical events may play a key role, for instance when they have a huge impact. We will study the paradigmatic example of extreme heat waves. In the recent past, new theoretical and numerical tools have been developed in the statistical mechanics community, in order to specifically study such rare events. Some of those approaches are based on large deviation theory for complex dynamical systems.

We will study the probability of extreme heat waves in a comprehensive GCM. At a fixed numerical cost, several hundreds more heat waves are observed than in a control run. The thousands of sampled extreme heat waves open the door to their dynamical studies, precursor, and fluctuation paths, in a way that can not be foreseen using conventional tools based on direct numerical simulations. Moreover extreme events that can not be observed in a GCM at a reasonable cost can now be studied. This new tool open new perspectives for the study of climate extremes. As an example we discuss teleconnection patterns for extremes.

The relation with statistical mechanics tools in general, and especially large deviation theory, will be emphasized.

Postdoctoral fellowship at UIUC: Data Assimilation for crop modeling using multisources of satellite remote sensing data

One Postdoctoral Researcher Position in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) and National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), full-time, 100% (2-year duration, with possibility of extension, contingent upon performance and funding)

Summary: The successful candidate will contribute to assimilating one or multiple satellite observations across the spectral bands (e.g. Visible, NIR, Solar-induced fluorescence, and Thermal infrared) into crop models to investigate crop productivity, water uses and nutrient cycles (e.g. nitrogen) in agroecosystems of the US Corn Belt.

Specific responsibilities include: developing and implementing data assimilation algorithms to integrate multi-source remote sensing observations into numerical models (e.g. land surface model); developing/building new modules for the land surface model or crop model; conducting regional simulations and seasonal predictions; preparing peer-reviewed publications and education materials; and communicating research at professional meetings.

The successful applicant will be working with Dr. Kaiyu Guan (kaiyug@illinois.edu, http://faculty.nres.illinois.edu/~kaiyuguan/) and a team with strong expertise in satellite remote sensing, ecohydrology, Earth system modeling, and high-performance computing. The applicant will be routinely working on Blue Waters supercomputing system (https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/blue-waters), the most powerful supercomputer in the U.S. universities.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in earth and atmospheric science, meteorology, hydrology, environmental engineering, physics, mathematics, or a closely related field. Research background in Earth system modeling (e.g. CLM), data assimilation, thermal remote sensing or boundary layer meteorology is highly preferred. Strong programing skills (e.g., Python, Fortran, C or Matlab in Linux environment) and prior experience in supercomputing or big data analytical systems is required, as the applicant will be working routinely in the Blue Waters supercomputer environment. Candidates will be considered if graduation with a Ph.D. is expected by the targeted starting date. Proficiency in spoken/written English is mandatory. The appointment is two years (renewed annually) and may be extended, contingent upon the performance. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience in relevant research.

Starting Date: Ideal starting time is Jan 1, 2018, but negotiable. The position is open till filled.

Application Process: To ensure full consideration, qualified candidates must send a cover letter, CV, and contact information of three references via e-mail to Dr. Kaiyu Guan (kaiyug@illinois.edu). All requested information must be submitted in order for your application to be considered. Incomplete application will not be reviewed. Applicants will be immediately reviewed upon receiving the application while the search may continue until the position is filled. For further information, please contact: Dr. Kaiyu Guan (kaiyug@illinois.edu), or visit http://faculty.nres.illinois.edu/~kaiyuguan/ for more information.
