M. K. (Peter) Yau received his B.Sc., M. Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then joined the Department of Atmospheric
and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University and is a full professor and the senior NSERC/Hydro-Quebec Industrial Research
Chair. He has made contributions in understanding detailed cloud processes, hurricanes, convection and cyclones, and the physics of precipitation. He was
the recipient of the President’s Prize of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) and was elected a
CMOS Fellow. He is the co-author of a popular textbook “A Short Course in Cloud Physics, 3rd Edition”.

Hello All,

as some of you may be aware, we have been involved in
building a climate modelling framework that can be used
entirely from Python.

I'm happy to inform you all about the first release of CliMT.
This version of CliMT is capable of running as a simplified
GCM, with a spectral dynamical core. The components
currently available in CliMT are suitable for research use.

Please do play around, and I am happy to receive any
comments/feedback!

Documentation, including installation instructions, are
available at:
http://climt.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html

The code is available at:
https://github.com/CliMT/climt

which contains many examples that you can adapt for
your own needs.

We are organizing a two-day short course on "Advances in Data Assimilation Techniques" under Continuing Education Programme in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on 21-22 September 2017. 

This two-day course will provide a glimpse of the advancements in data assimilation techniques, focusing especially on the land surface models and assimilation techniques. The speakers will initiate an introduction to the basics of data assimilation, and introduction to land data assimilation in weather and climate models. The course will also focus on the sources of uncertainty, characterization of uncertainty of model predictions, how data assimilation is essential for characterizing and reducing uncertainty and the feasibility of these in large scale high resolution model predictions.

The objective of the SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships for Indian Researchers is to introduce scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to international collaborative research opportunities, thereby furthering their research capacity and global perspective and forging long-term relationships with scientists, technologists and engineers in USA.

These awards will provide an excellent opportunity to young Indian scientists and technologists of all disciplines, under the age of 35 years to interact with the  U.S scientific community and get first-hand information of the developments taking place at the international level and to acquaint themselves with new scientific research methods and to collaborate in larger research project. TITLE: "REDUCTION OF MONSOON RAINFALL IN RESPONSE TO PAST AND FUTURE LAND-USE AND LAND COVER CHANGES"

ABSTRACT
Land-use and land cover change (LULCC) can have significant biophysical impacts on regional precipitation, including monsoon rainfall. Using global simulations with and without LULCC from 5 general circulation models (GCM), under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 scenario, we find that future LULCC significantly reduce monsoon precipitation in at least 4 (out of 8) monsoon regions. While monsoon rainfalls are likely to intensify under future global warming, we estimate that biophysical effects of LULCC substantially weaken future projections of [UTF-8?]monsoons’ rainfall by 9% (Indian region), 12% (East Asian), 32% (South African) and 41% (North African) relative to the changes in RCP8.5, with an average of ~30% for projections across the global monsoon regions. A similar strong contribution is found for biophysical effects of past LULCC to monsoon rainfall changes since the preindustrial period. Rather than remote effects, local land-atmosphere interactions, implying a decrease in evapotranspiration, soil-moisture and clouds along with more anticyclonic conditions, could explain this future reduction in monsoon rainfall.
