 Session Details (HS10):

The goal of this session is to contribute to the discussions on the consequences of climate change and its impact on  hydrological  extremes. In this session, studies addressing but not limited to the following questions are welcome:

i. Surface and Ground water management under climate change

ii. Variations in extreme hydrological events and possible attributing factors

iii. Present methodologies adopted, limitations and advances

iv. Stationarity/ Non-stationarity factors

v. Case studies on climate change impact assessment at local/ basin/ regional scales

vi. Flood and Drought analyses

vii. Streamflow assessment and Reservoir operation

viii. Future climate and hydrology

ix. Change in spatio-temporal pattern of precipitation

x. Adaptation and Mitigation strategies

xi. Policy making

xii. Remote sensing applications

Speaker's Bio:

M. K. (Peter) Yau received his B.Sc., M. Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then joined the Department of Atmospheric
and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University and is a full professor and the senior NSERC/Hydro-Quebec Industrial Research
Chair. He has made contributions in understanding detailed cloud processes, hurricanes, convection and cyclones, and the physics of precipitation. He was
the recipient of the President’s Prize of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) and was elected a
CMOS Fellow. He is the co-author of a popular textbook “A Short Course in Cloud Physics, 3rd Edition”.

Spurious linkages between extreme temperatures and farmer suicides

A recent paper, published by the PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences of the United States) and authored by Tamma A. Carleton, titled “Climate
Change and Agricultural Suicides in India” claims that “temperature during India’s
main agricultural growing season has a strong positive effect on annual suicide rates.”

building a climate modelling framework that can be used
entirely from Python.

I'm happy to inform you all about the first release of CliMT.
This version of CliMT is capable of running as a simplified
GCM, with a spectral dynamical core. The components
currently available in CliMT are suitable for research use.

We are organizing a two-day short course on "Advances in Data Assimilation Techniques" under Continuing Education Programme in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on 21-22 September 2017. 

This two-day course will provide a glimpse of the advancements in data assimilation techniques, focusing especially on the land surface models and assimilation techniques. The speakers will initiate an introduction to the basics of data assimilation, and introduction to land data assimilation in weather and climate models. The course will also focus on the sources of uncertainty, characterization of uncertainty of model predictions, how data assimilation is essential for characterizing and reducing uncertainty and the feasibility of these in large scale high resolution model predictions.

Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB; in partnership with the bi-national Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF; announces the SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships for Indian Researchers in USA as an initiative under the SERB Overseas Postdoctoral fellowship Scheme (SERB-OPDF) with the objective to build national capacity in frontier areas of Science and Engineering, which are of interest to India.

The objective of the SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships for Indian Researchers is to introduce scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to international collaborative research opportunities, thereby furthering their research capacity and global perspective and forging long-term relationships with scientists, technologists and engineers in USA.

These awards will provide an excellent opportunity to young Indian scientists and technologists of all disciplines, under the age of 35 years to interact with the  U.S scientific community and get first-hand information of the developments taking place at the international level and to acquaint themselves with new scientific research methods and to collaborate in larger research project. It will enable young Indian researchers to carry out a clearly defined research project at a place of their choice in U.S for a period of 12 months. The individual availing this fellowship would be called as SERB Indo-US Research Fellow.
Eligibility Criteria
Age: Upto 35 years as on 31 December 2016
Indian citizens who have completed their Ph.D. from a Public-funded R&D Laboratory/ Recognized Academic Institution / University /College in India. Those unemployed as on date should have completed their Ph.D. degree after 31 December 2014.

Place of work:
The fellow should be accepted and hosted by the U.S scientific/technological institution. There should be willingness on the part of the U.S institution to accept and extend necessary support to the candidate for the research proposed during the Fellowship.

The candidate should himself/herself correspond with their proposed host institute in the U.S for placement. Candidate is required to produce evidence, in the form of a letter of acceptance on the letterhead of the U.S. host institute, duly signed/stamped by the host. The letter should also include the merits/uniqueness of that host institute in the proposed area of research.
