Title: Analyzing Large-Scale Hydrologic Processes Using GRACE and Hydrometeorological Datasets

Abstract: Water demand in India is growing due to its increasing population, economic growth and urbanization. Consequently, knowledge of interdependencies of large-scale hydrometeorological processes is crucial for efficient water resources management. Estimates of Groundwater (GW) derived from Terrestrial Water Storage (TWS) data provided by Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission along with various other satellite observations and model estimates now facilitates such investigations. In an attempt which is first of its kind in India, this study proposes Independent Component Analysis (ICA) based spatiotemporal analysis of Precipitation (P), Evapotranspiration (ET), Surface Soil Moisture (SSM), Root Zone Soil Moisture (RZSM), TWS and GW to understand such interdependencies at intra- and interannual time scales. Results indicate that 84–99% of the total variability is explained by the first 6 ICs of all the variables, analyzed for a period 2002–2014. The Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) is the causative-factor of the first component describing 61–82% of the total variability. The phase difference between all seasonal components of P and that of RZSM and ET is a month whereas it is 2 months between the seasonal components of P and that of SSM, TWS and GW. ET is observed to be largely dependent on RZSM while GW appears as the major component of TWS. GW and TWS trends of opposite nature were observed in northern and southern part of India caused by inter-annual rainfall variability. These findings when incorporated in modelling frameworks would improve forecasts resulting in better water management.

Title: Assessment of Surface Water Storage trends for increasing groundwater areas in India

Abstract: Recent studies based on Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission suggested that groundwater has increased in central and southern parts of India. However, surface water, which is an equally important source of water in these semi-arid areas has not been studied yet. In the present study, the study areas were outlined based on trends in GRACE data followed by trend identification in surface water storages and checking the hypothesis of causality. Surface Water Extent (SWE) and Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) derived from Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) respectively, are selected as proxies of surface water storage (SWS). Besides SWE and SSM, trend test was performed for GRACE derived terrestrial water storage (TWS) for the study areas named as R1, R2, GOR1 and KOR1. Granger-causality test is used to test the hypothesis that rainfall is a causal factor of the inter-annual variability of SWE, SSM and TWS. Positive trends were observed in TWS for R1, R2 and GOR1 whereas SWE and SSM show increasing trends for all the study regions. Results suggest that rainfall is the granger-causal of all the storage variables for R1 and R2, the regions exhibiting the most significant positive trends in TWS.

Prof P P Mujumdar's group published a new article in Nature Scientific Reports. The article examines concurrent meteorological droughts and heatwaves.

Abstract: The impacts of concurrent droughts and heatwaves could be more serious compared to their individual occurrence. Meteorological drought condition is generally characterized by low rainfall, but impact of such an event is amplified with simultaneous occurrence of heatwaves. Positive feedback between these two extremes can worsen the rainfall deficit situation to serious soil moisture depletion due to enhanced evapotranspiration. In this study, the concurrence of meteorological droughts and heatwaves is investigated in India using Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) high resolution gridded data over a period of 60 years. Significant changes are observed in concurrent meteorological droughts and heatwaves defined at different percentile based thresholds and durations during the period 1981–2010 relative to the base period 1951–1980. There is substantial increase in the frequency of concurrent meteorological droughts and heatwaves across whole India. Statistically significant trends in the spatial extent of droughts are observed in Central Northeast India and West Central India; however, the spatial extent affected by concurrent droughts and heatwaves is increasing across whole India. Significant shifts are identified in the distribution of spatial extent of concurrent drought and heatwaves in India compared to the base period.

The Model Development Department at RMS is responsible for the development of models to assess the risk from natural and man-made catastrophes. A group in Noida works in close collaboration with colleagues in Europe and US, to help quantifying catastrophe risk across all of RMS's products and services.

Objective of the role

Looking for a skilled scientist/technical specialist as catastrophe risk modeler, or a similar role to be a part of model development team that develops probabilistic flood models. He/ she should have an in-depth understanding of hydrodynamics, hydrology, hydraulics, and a good understanding of the integration of data and models. He/ she should have good problem-solving and communication abilities and adapt to work in a quick-paced and project oriented environment.

Key Accountabilities

·         Responsible for understanding, analyzing & developing hydrological models for development of flood hazard model, loss model, calibration and validation
·         Communication and interaction with colleagues in global offices
·         Responsible for research driven process enhancement initiatives in flood modeling
Experience Required

·         Sound knowledge of hydrological and hydraulic processes and modelling
·         Command in one or more of the programming languages: Python, R, FORTRAN, MATLAB
·         Knowledge of C#, C++, JavaScript would be valued
·         Linux/Shell scripting for data management
·         Experience working with large datasets
·         Basic knowledge and interest in catastrophe risk insurance industry

This a new satellite launched on 2nd July 2014. Earth satellite mission designed to study the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide globally.

Researchers who study the interaction of plants, carbon and climate are eagerly awaiting data from NASA's upcoming Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 mission on a nearly invisible fluorescent glow emitted from the chlorophyll contained within plants. Hence this can also be useful for hydrologists.
