ORF Chennai organised an interaction on “Interlinking of Rivers: Prospects & Problems,” on 20 July 2019 between Dr. S. Janakarajan, president, SaciWATERS, Hyderabad and V. Ponraj, an associate of late former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

V. Ponraj argues :
Interlinking of Rivers (ILR) will ensure greater equity of water by enhancing availability in drought prone and rain-fed areas with examples. Technological and project management capabilities of our country can make river networking a reality with long-term planning and proper investment.
Dr. S. Janakarajan argues :
ILR would face several challenges — political, economic and above all ecological. Diverting rivers will have an impact on downstream biodiversity. Unfortunately, no studies are being done on the ecological costs and the losses to the ecosystem. These are not one-time losses, but cumulative, and therefore need to be studied at a deeper level.

Revival of the Kshipra river in Ujjain under river linking project (Initial cost INR 432 crore)
According to Executive Engineer Sanjay Joshi of Narmada Valley Development Authority, Narmada river water has been lifted to a height of 350 metres using electricity driven pumps, after which it has been diverted to the origin of the Kshipra river which is around 50 kilometres away.
3000 village and 70 towns of malwa region will benefit and 16 lakh hectares of land can be irrigated in Malwa region.

It will be inappropriate to tell which package is best without any work done on the same. One way to come up with which package to use is to see which articles have used them (or based on which published article it has been developed) and how relevant those articles are for your research work. Consider it only as a suggestion. All the best.

River Linking may have the potential to accelerate global warming on a short term in addition to its possible adverse effect  on monsoon rain-fall in India on a long term.

Hi,

The problem you are facing needs thorough look into data used, model created and the results obtained. It will be very difficult for anyone to give satisfactory answer to this problem without checking all the steps followed. I would suggest plotting the raw data of variables of all grid points, bias corrected data, and the downscaled data and then comparing the all the plots for better understanding.

Can you please suggest any solution for the above mention problem?

My view :
50% of downscaled temperature data has lesser value for higher RCP is "an observation based on analysis performed and not a problem" . Also it doesn't say anything about trends (which may be present and should be look into) in the results obtained. Check for the frequency of events (above certain threshold) obtained in results.

You can use Grads to regrid and automate regriding for many variables/files.

Not needed. After standardization, you can perform PCA.

Eigenvalues of the covariance matrix of data matrix is used to select the number of newly formed variable (without any physical significance).

Hello,

In downscaling, we usually take grids which encompass the whole study area and not just the grid which falls into it. This way the minimum number of grids for the study comes out to be 4 (for one climate variable). Thus more number of variables necessitates use of PCA.
