Post by: adrijaroy1994 on September 06, 2017, 12:13:41 PM
Hello,

I am trying to generate soil parameter file using FAO soil map. I have the DSMW.shp vector layer having attributes.

I need some idea about the data. Have anyone used it?

Hi Adrija
You can download HWSD soil map from this website
http://www.fao.org/soils-portal/soil-survey/soil-maps-and-databases/harmonized-world-soil-database-v12/en/
It is having bil and database file . You can combine these two with arcgis database connection. This map having information about the two layers, topsoil(up to 30 cm) and subsoil. Extract the soil texture(t_texture and s_texture) information for your model grids. Vic website provide you the parameter for corresponding texture.
Hope this will help you..:)

I would suggest you to read documentation about HWSD first (see link below). Then you will have more ideas about this dataset. What you really need from this database is soil texture and/or USDA soil texture codes; then from such codes you can find other soil water properties required by VIC model. Read few VIC references, you can figure it out by yourself.
